Why it is important to know and remember history: lectures for schoolchildren in the communities of Chernihiv region
From April 18 to April 23, a series of 4 lectures for schoolchildren "Why it is important to know and remember history" took place. They were held for about 100 students in Ivanovo, Kyiv and Kiptiv communities.
Such educational lectures ‒ an important part of the project "Collective memory of the war in Chernihiv region." At these lectures, the speaker spoke not only about the importance of history in human life and society, but also about its dark sides ‒ manipulation and propaganda. Together with students discussed how to manipulate dates, events, facts. They said that history often becomes a method of political propaganda. For example, how historical characters are used in propaganda through the creation of monuments and monuments.
At the events, children discussed the complexity of knowing history, because through personal experience there is often an awareness of the past. The personal stories of each resident and resident of the communities form a collective memory of the events that the residents of Chernihiv region experienced in February - March 2022. Oral history, which people pass on to each other, is also one of the methods of fixing and researching history. The experience of each and every is an important source, albeit subjective.
"We believe that knowledge and preservation of history are very important for both adults and children. This helps us understand the modern world, draw the right conclusions and avoid the mistakes of the past. Especially when Ukraine continues to fight for the preservation of its independence, " ‒ said Natalia Apanasko, assistant coordinator of the project.
These events were organized and conducted by the team of the NGO "Association for Democratic Development" in coalition with NGO "Women for Development", NGO "Kipti Women Society", NGO "Yustyna" та NGO "Dobro Time".
