Myths and facts about psychologists and psychological help

As part of the project "Psychosocial support of vulnerable population groups in the communities of Chernihiv region", we strive not only to provide professional assistance, but also to dispel myths that prevent people from seeking support. After all, due to outdated ideas, many are afraid to ask for help. Let's see what is a myth and what — is a reality.

Myth: Only weak people go to a psychologist.

Fact: No, it's not. Contacting a psychologist — is, on the contrary, a bold and responsible step. This shows that a person is ready to work on himself and is not afraid to solve problems. This is a choice of a strong personality.

Mif: You just need to get your hands on it. I will/I will be impressed.

Fact: Often "grabbing yourself" means ignoring a problem that only makes the condition worse. A psychologist will help you find a way out, teach you effective methods of combating difficulties, and not just endure them. You can't always cope on your own, and that's okay.

Myth: A psychologist will tell you what to do and everything will be fine.

Fact: Psychologist — is not a wizard. Its task — is not to give ready-made "recipes of happiness", but to help you find your own answers. It will create a safe space where you will learn effective tools that will help you understand the problem.

Myth: Psychologists work only with serious disorders.

Fact: Of course, psychologists also help in difficult cases, but their work is much wider. You can turn to them with any problem: stress, relationship difficulties, anxiety or just the feeling that "something is wrong". A psychologist will help you figure it out even when you yourself cannot understand the cause of your discomfort. If necessary, a psychologist can refer a psychotherapist or psychiatrist for consultation.

We hope this information has helped you better understand the essence of psychological care. Taking care of mental health is an important aspect of life, and contacting a — specialist is a considered decision.
